Rapid City Journal: At Sunrise Ranch, Grass-fed Meat and Agritourism

Friday, July 30, 2010

In Edgemont, South Dakota, Sunrise Ranch serves up organic, grass-fed beef and hosts guests in a 6-bedroom lodge. Rapid City Journal reporter Barbara Soderlin profiles the ranch and owner Mark Hollenbeck, who has some great quotes in the piece, like this one: "We want to establish relationships with people that eat the meat. It holds me to a higher standard because people know exactly where their food came from." Hollenbeck describes his style of unconventional ranching as fitting in perfectly with hosting visitors. When people stay on the ranch, they become educated about their meat, says Hollenbeck. And when they become educated about their meat, they become more committed to eating organic and grass-fed. Ranch guests also have the opportunity to horseback ride, hunt, drive cattle, and find petroglyphs.
