In the Lane Report, a Kentucky business
news magazine, writer Katherine Tandy Brown features
the newly-opened Country Girl at
Heart Bed and Breakfast. Owner Darlene Rose Ill had longed for
life on a farm as a New England suburbanite, and fulfilled her
dream when she bought a 140-acre Amish farm in 2007. She and her
family then took on the work of renovating the house and learning
the ropes of farming. They now raise grass-fed beef, laying hens,
goats, ducks, and horses. Ill opened the B and B in 2009. Guests
can get some hands-on farm experience, and Ill welcomes corporate
retreats. "So many people say they'll come for the b'n'b, but
probably won't get involved with the farm work," says Ill. "But,
they all do."
