Summary
FARM FAMILY: Midge Jolly and Tom Weyant are artisanal salt farmers in the Florida Keys. The salt farm is situated on the edge of the Great White Heron Wildlife Refuge, a short drive from Key West.
FARMSTAY: You may be involved as little or as much as you like in the work life of our family salt farm and market garden. We may be collecting sea water, harvesting salt, building salt houses, weeding gardens, packaging salt, trimming trees, managing compost/plants/produce, baking specialty cookies, painting, repairing bicycles, cleaning windows, trimming sponges or any of a number of other farm life chores, depending on the rhythm of the farm on any given day or week.
FLORIDA KEYS: The farm is located 1.5 miles from the bus line to Key West, in the interest of transparency; this is not the most user friendly public transport in the land; a vehicle is much easier, be it bicycle or auto. We do have an amazing new stretch of bike trail but it IS NOT COMPLETE all the way to Key West; only for the road warrior cyclist. Great biking trail on island, small convenience store on island, other public sports facilities at Sugarloaf School on island. We are on the edge of the Great White Heron Wildlife Refuge and there are thousands of acres of native land on our very small island. Close to Bahia Honda State Park for great water enjoyment.
OTHER GUESTS ON THE LAND: We host various interns and as well as farm stay guests and airbnb guests. We are listed as Mariposa (with various modifiers) on airbnb.com. Airbnb.com is our preferred reservation service. We ask that all potential guests have a profile photo and are verified thru airbnb. There are several different offerings by us on airbnb, please check them out.
ONLY a few RULES: All are related to safety and health. Watch out for the local poisonous plants. We allow no weapons, no drugs, alcohol in very limited amounts. Be mindful of others personal space. Quiet time is quiet time: 10pm-7am; quiet personal noise not to be heard by others is fine.
No Smoking on the land...it is death to many of our crops. Chemical/Scent Free Alert! We request that scents be kept to an absolute minimum-clothing, personal, etc... We limit all scents in our home, as best possible, due to extreme allergies and request that guests make every effort to do the same when planning to be in our home or on the land. Toward this goal we provide unscented organic castille soap for bathing and hand washing and organic unscented shampoo. Summertime is hot and buggy...a lot like living in the wilderness.
ACCESSIBiLITY: There are stairs to reach the house. While we do not have dedicated accessibility options on the land, we are willing and eager to make all possible accommodations for any needs to increase accessibility, Please inquire.
NOTE: Listed farm address is mailing address; not physical address. GPS is NOT very reliable in our island world, directions to the farm are sent after booking farmstay via airbnb
