Summary
Still Pond Farms is a working, certified organic farm on the property. Organic produce grown here is incorporated into breakfast menus at the Inn whenever possible. Succulent tomatoes, sweet corn, cucumbers, squash and Crimson Sweet watermelons are all grown utilizing farming practices that not only promote good stewardship of the land, but also yield produce that is healthier, more nutritious, and certainly more flavorful.
A new feature of the farm, in conjunction with Georgia Olive Farms, is an olive tree orchard. Surprisingly, olive trees have a rich history in Georgia, having been grown on both Saint Simons and Cumberland islands in the late 1800’s. Many of the trees on Cumberland Island survive even today. The trees were grown primarily for olive oil production, and the same is true for the young olive trees getting their start now at Still Pond Farms, although we also have some table olive varieties
Olive oil consumption in the United States has burgeoned over recent years, due in large part to its health effect in cooking. Interestingly, a recent study by the University of California at Davis indicates that a great many of the oils imported and sold in the US do not meet the standards for extra virgin olive oil (EVOO). The production of premium olive oils in our own region will not only ensure high quality, extra virgin oil, pressed within hours of harvesting, but will also dramatically reduce the carbon footprint associated with production and transport of the final product.
