Summary
Harrisdale Homestead was built in the 2nd half of the 19th century and continued to be part of the Harrisdale Farm until the building and 5 acres were sectioned off to become a not for profit affiliated with the Wallace Foundation for Rural Research and Development. The family continues to own the farmland around the house.
The farm name comes from the Atlantic Northern Railroad’s “Harrisdale” livestock stop that was just east of the farm. This short rail line helped area farmers by providing easy transportation to market for their farm goods. In the early 1900s, cattle and hogs were shipped to market from the stop.
Today the farm acts as a retreat and offers overnight lodging for those seeking a rural experience. The intent is to contribute to rural vitality and sustainability by facilitating activities that foster local food and agriculture, cultivate community, and promote democratic participation and leadership.
