Summary
Apple Pond Farm is 2 hours from New York City in the Catskills, situated high on a hill it offers panoramic views. It has been farmed since 1865. Sonja Hedlund and Dick Riseling have operated the farm since 1973 as a horse-powered, organic farm featuring draft and pleasure horses, naturally raised sheep and goats. Through several wind and solar renewable energy systems the farm seeks to be as independent of fossil fuels as possbile.
There is nothing like staying at a working farm to restore your spirit. Our fully furnished guest house for our farm vacation is available year round. You are welcome to join us as we do daily chores, give grain and hay to horses, sheep and goats and milk several does. We invite you to pick from the garden and gather eggs during your stay with us.
As a shepherd and goat keeper, Sonja takes pride in her flocks. Making goat cheese, bread, sheep shearing, spinning, dyeing wool and weaving have become special interests. Dick is responsible for the solar hot water and solar electric systems have been added to the farm; a round straw bale houseand converted diesel farm truck that now runs on used vegetable oil. He is a community activist on several issues: sustainable development, renewable.
We are pleased to show you around the farm, introducing you to our animals, garden and renewable energy systems. If you want to learn to make goat cheese, bake bread, spin wool, process vegetables or have a consultation on your home or business concerning energy conservation, we will be happy to accommodate you.
