Summary
Springfield, with its tin roof, clapboard siding, and whitewashed fences, sits amidst a working farm. It boasts the original barn, farm animals and turn of the century farm equipment. The Inn offers a glimpse of the past with modern conveniences. Come and relax on one of our porches or under a hundred year old pecan tree. Watch the fields from planting to harvest on land that has been farmed since the 1700´s.
The Inn is located just south of historic Hertford, North Carolina at the intersection of US Highway 17 South (Ocean Highway) and Edenton Road Street. The property has been in the White family since it was purchased by John O. White in 1891, who was a Quaker from the Whiteston community in Perquimans County. The Inn, circa 1896, was recently renovated by John O. White’s great-grandson and his wife, Joe and Mary White.
There are seven fireplaces in the house, each with its original mantel. The fireplaces had been bricked-in through the years to support furnaces, but were reopened when the home was renovated. The fireboxes are unusual in that they did not have solid floors and hearths. Instead, they were built into the floor joists as sandboxes.
