Summary
We are a bio-diverse 54 acre farm doing things the old fashioned way. By combining plants and animals in a manner that produces the highest quality and best tasting food, we nurture the land at the same time. Old School Farm is situated alongside the scenic Dyberry trout stream and nestled in "pleasant valley" with miles of flat, low traffic roads for biking and 8,000 acres of state game lands nearby for hiking and cross country skiing.
We are just down the road from scenic Tanner's Falls and only 30 minutes from Elk Mountain. An incredibly serene cascade of waterfalls also borders the property. We are ten minutes from downtown Honesdale. Visitors will experience living simply on the land while learning about state of the art technology where needed. See roof-top vegetable and moss gardens, solar powered watering systems, and by the fall of 2012 we expect to have our wood fired bread and pizza oven operational.
The old family farmhouse was designed by the Walter Family and built in 1925 and it's original integrity has been preserved. It has six bedrooms and is architecturally significant, particularly on the inside, with original chestnut trim and cherry floors upstairs. An Amish-built timber frame/peg barn has recently been built and a flock of Icelandic sheep, bee hives, and a one acre vegetable plot now grace the lower pastures. A small trout pond has recently been dug adjacent to the old springhouse which doubles as a root cellar.
We also have a small orchard, as well as free-ranging heritage breed turkeys and chickens. Our Farm Manager, Dave Campeau is quite the cook and also a wealth of knowledge when it comes to the variety of work going on at the farm. He's also a great guy and enjoys hosting guests and having them be a part of the daily farm activities if they so choose (we offer a small discount based on hours of work performed during your stay at the farm if you so decide)
If you are looking for a relaxed time in a bucolic location with lots to learn about small scale, organic farming while getting in some great outdoor activities and exercise, then Old School Farm should be on your list of places to visit. We are just 2.5 hours from New York City and Philadelphia.
