Summary
Weatherbury Farm is a sustainable grass-fed beef and lamb farm. Certified organic grains (soft and hard wheat, oats, spelt, open-pollinated corn, emmer and einkorn) are also grown on the farm. We feed our free-range chickens organically using grains we are growing. (These eggs are collected by farm vacation guests for the next day's breakfast.)
Our mission as a farm vacation is to educate our guests about farming and agriculture, with an emphasis on organic. At Weatherbury Farm Vacation, a family-run venture, we are constantly working towards providing “green” tourism both in our farm vacation bed and breakfast and farm operations. Weatherbury Farm seeks to continue the concerns of the 19th century and early 20th century people with minimizing external inputs by natural recycling and conservation.
Weatherbury Farm is a quiet place, removed from the cares of the world (but just 45 minutes southwest of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania). Each day after breakfast, guests are invited to help Farmer Dale with chores. After chores families can enjoy life on the farm. Many families have fun watching (from a distance, of course) Farmer Dale and Farmer Nigel at work in the fields. Or sometimes (more often than we like), they may be working on keeping our farm equipment in good running order. Some families like to get their hands dirty and help Marcy weed the garden! Most families, however, enjoy the opportunity to kick back and relax on the farm and enjoy life in the slow lane. A visit to Weatherbury Farm, with the exception of morning chores is a time for families to enjoy unstructured time together
Not only does Weatherbury Farm offer the opportunity to learn about life on the farm, it is a great home base for exploring Pittsburgh, southwestern Pennsylvania, the northern panhandle of West Virginia and eastern Ohio. Families will especially enjoy the farm's 100 acres, swimming pool (on a summer's day) and kids’ corner after a day of visiting sites.
Families staying for two or more nights are invited to participate in our Weatherbury Farm Kid program; families receive a packet (filled with coloring & activity books and educational materials) about farming. Younger children do chores and complete a picture worksheet; older children have fun doing chores and learning with our "Official Farm Kid Workbook. Nearly 1400 children have earned the "Official Weatherbury Farm Kid" designation.
