Summary
FOUR CENTURIES AGO... This was the homeland of the Chickahominy Indians. MORE THAN TWO CENTURIES AGO... Furneau Southall welcomed guests to his prosperous Virginia plantation. TODAY... The Gordineer family welcomes you to relive Virginia's Golden Age.
The site is a museum of Early Virginia Folk Architecture where historic buildings are used to tell the history of the James River Plantation Country. Numerous interpretive plaques present architectural history, Civil War history and African-American heritage, as well as information about the flora and fauna of the area. Garden areas include a "The Path", formal boxwood garden, Piney Grove's old-fashioned flower beds, the Harwood family graveyard, Ashland's romantic garden, and the Nature Trail. The barnyard of farm animals, the star-filled country sky and bird-friendly gardens also provide first-rate live entertainment!
Regardless of you itinerary, your visit to the past begins, depending on the season, with Mint Juleps on the front porch. Each morning the farm bell announces the plantation breakfast served by candlelight in the 1790 LOG ROOM. The hearty morning meal prepares you for a busy day of touring, a day of recreation or just a relaxing day at Piney Grove.
