Summary
Our farm has been organic since it was settled 97 years ago. In 2006 we became biodynamic and in 2008 obtained our certification as Certified Naturally Grown. We grow many things -- heirloom apples, year round salad gardens, berries, fruit and nut trees (some mature, some still young). We have a milking cow and her heifer, a milking goat and her kids, a few beef cattle, free range chickens, seasonal turkeys in alternate years, and honeybees in innovative hives. We're particularly good at caring for our animals.
We offer stays at our farm to people who want to get their feet back on the ground in a calm environment surrounded by thriving plants, pensive animals, fragrant herb gardens, blooming flowers, quiet places to relax and hear the birds singing in the spruce trees. We are especially interested in creating a peaceful place to listen to your own guiding light.
While we encourage you to revel in your quiet time, we also teach skills that can help you be more sustainable at home. Learn to care for bees, goats, cows and chickens, make a raised bed garden, help us spray enlivening compost tea on our plants, learn to preserve fresh food, make simple cheeses, bake a delicious pie. Take part in farm life chores and weave in time to relax in the hammock with a good book or swim in the river at the end of a hot day. Our tiny village (pop. 2,000) has a general store, two room church and a historic one room schoolhouse that is our community center.
We offer two ways to do a farmstay with us. You're welcome to accompany us doing our daily tasks around the farm as you want (the basic farmstay), or we can design time that's centered around what you'd like most to learn (agritherapy stay).
The farm is nestled in a valley of rolling hills. The road ends a half mile east of us. Beyond is the state forest (no roads) and the Cascade Mountains. Even though we're very rural, drive time into Portland is about 35 minutes. Many of our neighbors commute to town and say they enjoy coming home at night to their rural home with hooting night owls.
